Late for school...again

scuola!AGAIN! It happened AGAIN! Last week I stopped by Kiddo's school and asked The Lady, Hey! When does school start? She said to come back the following Thurs when they will have a definite date. I stopped by yesterday, I walk in with Kiddo and I hear voices. Yes, once again we missed the first day of school. Let me correct that, we missed the first first day of school. If it happens twice (you know, like last year) is it considered a family tradition?

There was only one other kiddo in the class, we were early. Maestra Carmen was there and a new teacher, Maestra Lilisomething (pretty name just forgot what it is, so much for short term memory eh) which means I'll start with the Fashion Update from Bella Sicilia next week when all the other moms realize school has already started. I still have no idea what pant legs are doing this year.

Picture it, Sicily, this morning, 6am (yes, 6AM!):
Mommy they are going to close the school hurry up! We're going to be late! Six aaaaaeeeee emmmm. Bah. Yes, somebody was very excited this morning. When we were leaving she asked for her coat, you know, the swing coat. The one I haven't finished yet. The one I'll finish right after I complete the Ella charts? Then she asks where her socks are that I was knitting for her. Her memory is freaky. I wonder if she can be appeased with felted slippers. Yeah, slippers, that'll work.

More later. Time for caffine then it's Chartsville.

Wow. I can't imagine school starting that way here. Are they that casual with whatever you call the "upper grades" schools in Italy? I think the folks in my school district's Ivory Tower are already working on next year's calendar. And we've only been back in the classroom for 8 days. Not that I'm counting or anything. It is, unfortunately, cutting into my knitting time. I miss my deck and the cool afternoon shade knitting sessions of summer. Oh well, it's finally cooling off and I'll get to wear my wool socks soon enough.

Good grief, if I were a teacher I'd want to know when I was going to go to work, you know?

She's adorable, btw. :)

I had to read that 3 times I'm so in shock! I know Denise already said it but MAN! just starting school whenever. I can't find the words.

I need to travel more...

p.s. Kiddo looks so very cute.

man, i can't imagine things being so laid back here. the princess is in prek and you know they take their damn tardies quite seriously. and lucky you...you only have one child to get up and ready...i have to get the princess up, dressed, fed and then get the other two at least up and fed so we can pile into the car and drop of her highness (or her heinyness depending on her mood that morning). and yes, the memories these kids have shocks me until the next time they get in trouble and they don't "remember" they aren't supposed to jump on the bed.

great pic of your principessa :O)

Oh yeah. Felted slippers. I would forget everything if you made me felted slippers! :P

See, if she wants socks, you need to find someone who actually likes knitting fine yarns on tiny needles (say... me, for example) and offer them bribes/compensation.

Princessima looks adorable!

What an amazing cutie. I swear, she could be me about 32 years ago (except I had blonde hair and an eye patch).

I can't believe you missed the first day and that they were so laid back. I was losing sleep two months before Girlfriend's first day!

That happened to me when I was studying abroad in France. They'd just change the entire school schedule on a whim, and we exchange students would show up and stupidly stand there in front of the locked door. No one could tell us ahead of time what classes would be taught that semester or anything. And in order to sign up for some classes, you had to have the "department head" OK your schedule, so I went to find him and his secretary said, "Oh, he's in Spain for two months. And no, no one else can sign it for him." It was unlike anything I've ever experienced.

Must keep in mind Sicily runs on "Sicilian Time" :) Jr high and high school start next Monday (it isn't a mad house on the street in front yet), just elementary started on Weds. It is STILL hothothot and everybody is hanging on to those last few days of summer. Once the water is too cold to swim in (I imagine it's rather nippy now i.e.the Med isn't the perfect bath tub temp anymore). I don't blame them. Winter is a torture and everybody is way too pale.

Nice thing that happened on the way to school this morning: turned the corner and were walking past one of the churches that is being re-finished/cleaned/worked on. Out walks a wiry musculy (sp) bronzed native, shirtless is all his yumminess. I'll trade lax time for half nekkid construction workers anyday ;)

That is hilarious that they don't know when they start school! Thanks for a laugh.
