lovin' the loym

oopsTo market to market. Didn't need a fat pig this time, not that I ever do but Kiddo needed a grembuielle (a smock hell if I know how to spell it) for school. There is not a uniform but there is the smock. Thankfully, lunch, paints, glue etc. end up on the smock and not the clothes. While at the smock stand Kiddo noticed they had The Barbie Backpack. The backpack she just had to have. At 40 euros, I don't theeeenk so.

So I suggested we go see if the Purse Lady has anything of interest for us (here's hoping 'eh).

As luck would have it she had a plush bear backpack that looks like it is hugging you when you are wearing it. Cute. Perfect for a 5yo in kindergarden. As we were walking around the table I spied another stuffed animal sort of thing, I pulled it out of the pile, ooh cute a plum. Okay so 2 new backpacks for 2 bucks. And both of us were happy. Last night Kiddo brings in her backpacks to show to The Man. He ooed and aaahed over the first one. Then gasps. Then laughs. Then asks "WHAT's THAT?!" pointing to the plum. Uh, tis a backpack dear. Laughing, OMG! It's obscene! I look at it again. OMG! You're right! Make it disappear he says. I will once I find it. Gee, do any of you think this looks oh a bit phallic?

After the Purse Lady Kiddo suggests we go see if the LOYM has yarn yet. She "wanted to get some blue yarn for Lisa. Whattie? You are sending yarn to Lisa?? Apparently Kiddo is scheming up a swap. I was amused. So past more tables and we are nearing the LOYM's table. I was thinking he'd at least be able to give me a guestimate as to the arrival of the new season goods, if he was even there. Suddenly I stop. I gasp. I see plastic bags. Many many plastic bags with YARN! We make our way over, kiddo starts digging thru the table looking for blue yarn. I immediately start eyeballing what he has while mentally counting the cash in my backpack to figure out how much I could buy and still get that post market Happy Meal. Since I was limited in funds at that moment I went with those I would most likely use first if they happen to be in the stash. The LOYM said it was the very first shipment he'd gotten in for the season. First day he brought them to the market. So nice of Kiddo to suggest we take a peek :)

First a perfect loose ply dark blue cotton. 6 balls. Good weight, is the same as some cream colored stuff I picked up in a hole in the wall on Gozo. Looks like it'll be nice and splitty. Then there was the lovely cream colored cotton/wool. The blend/plying whatevering is such that it feels like a cottony velour and has some odd coloring variations, very subtly. Will work well with some sort of textures. 3 balls of it. Picked up 3 balls of pink cotton with a shiny bit in it. Wasn't until I got home that I'd read the tag contents and saw the shiny stuff was silk! Pretty ! Next the viscose/cotton, 5 balls. Just had to see how it would knit up. And the colors, uber tacky, reminds me of the animal print shirts that are so..well here. CU here. Thisblack mako cotton tape with silvery crap on it jumped right off the table and into my arms. Will be knitting up another Marina wrap out of it. Will look good over winter jackets as well as bare arms, and hey there's the shiny stuff on it. Weird is the shiny crap looks to be applied to the tape post production. It is not a woven/plyed thread or part of the actual tape. Finally some viscose (yes full blown petro yarn). Some funky blue and red viscose tape that was originally produced for Missioni 8 balls.I dig the way the light changes the colors. T'was a deal, 15 euros to be exact and there was lunch money left over. Not bad eh? For those of you just joining, the LOYM gets shipments from the producers up north who whip up fibers and such for the Milan design houses. Seasonal. From now thru oh late April/mid May he'll have in fastabulous fibers (and some crap of course) for cheap.

Some of you recall my previous postings about the Commie pub down the street (and the bartender who isn't a commie per se but just works there) (and makes really strong drinks). The Man has posted a bit more on the Nevesky Pub and what it's all about. In case you're in Catania and want a bit of people watching in the evening, this makes for an interesting perch. Check out his latest post - The Commie Pub Around the Corner (oh please make The Man's day, leave him a comment already why don't ya) (:

Me thinks a contest is in order, prize: The Phallic Plum full of delights from the LOYM.

Now off to pet my stash, tomorrow is Reads bookmarks dump.
Arrrrr.

Can you give the plum a nose job? Either that, or use for Safe Sex demonstrations (proper way to apply a condom?).

Sounds like a great haul from LYOM. Makes me wish I was in your neighborhood. Alas, alack, I have St. Vincent's and the Goodwill. Not quite in the same league.

Somebody warn Ronald! Grimace is after him - and it's not a chocolate shake he's lookin' for this time!

Sound like you had a lovely visit with the LOYM. sigh. I'm so jealous. "...just pea green with envy."

Nice haul! Why would you want a splitty yarn? An dI have to agree on the "plum" situation. It looks a bit too muck like

OMg! When I first saw the close-up, I thought it was some weird kind of codpiece or "willie warmer". LOVE your blog, btw. Not too many people link to Little Green Footballs. (BG)

PLUM GROWERS MARKETING BOARD MEETING

"John, when we said we wanted to improve our image you suggested a mascot named Peter the Plum. Now we all thought it was a good idea and gave you the go ahead. And now we have come to... uh... regret our decision. Perhaps hiring you from an advertisement in Penthouse wasn't our best recruitment plan. But that's beyond the point. What are we going to do with all of these cases of "Peter Prune" merchandise now? Who would want a suggestive fruit?"

---------------------------------------

Do you think they were subconsciously trying to get more men to eat fruit? "Enhance your life naturally with plums!" ROFL!

" Finally some viscose (yes full blown petro yarn)."

Viscose is NOT petroyarn! Viscose is a cousin of rayon, also made from wood pulp. While viscose is a manmade yarn, it's not a petroleum product... so not petroyarn.

(This bugged me when I first read the post, but I didn't have time to reply then. )

Oy Mankee you are correct (of course).
I DO tend to lump them together after
discovering "acrylico" and "viscosa" are used
interchangably by vendors here. In the past
had brought home the latter to find it was
the former. The do the same w/ polyester and
silk as well. IF only it would be acceptable to
burn test at the market!

alas, point taken. Lashes with wet scratchy acrylic
at dawn for me.
